I remember my white progressive friend hyperventilating and calling me a racist when I said "We need voter ID." Usually, I don't let the stupid politics of pretty smart people whom I genuinely like interfere with friendship, but I just couldn't get past that. He honestly believed I was a racist. And if he didn't, he was utterly mendacious, and not someone to be around or trust. Either way, we couldn't be friends. As his friend, I wouldn't want to inflict myself on someone with such a low opinion of me. And if he'd knowingly lie to win an argument, then I didn't want to be around him, on my own account.
