I don't think Russia cares if somebody makes a deal with Ukraine for mineral concessions. It just won't tolerate a hostile neighbor under the control of USA/NATO. Russia doesn't want to rule Ukraine, imo. I think that if Ukraine acceded to Russia's demands for neutrality and stops trying to join NATO, that there can be peace. I think that regardless of what anyone says, Russia is probably going to stop at the Dnepr, with a border that's easily defended (or as easy as possible, given the terrain). We've had lunatics running our foreign policy for a long time, and finding some sense is very disruptive to the lunatic ecosystem. They're so caught up in their delusions of grandeur, that they're mad at reality, itself.
