@buckrockerm Yes. Same with a maul for splitting wood. You still give it a boost on its way down, but most of the "work" is "throwing" that 10-pound or 8-pound weight into the air, with your right (main) hand close to the head. Then slide that hand down to the end of the handle.

How new to that kind of work were you? Sounds to me like the old man was trying to tell you without telling you that you didn't have the hang of it, yet. But more likely, he was just toughened up from years of hard work.
