All we have to do is more than double our output of copper, cobalt, and a number of other metals, which has never been done and will require a huge diversion of all production to One Thing. Or the two or three things that represent the extent of your imagination. Meanwhile, how many people will freeze or starve? How many other, better ideas, will die before they're even born? Do you realize how much energy and how many resources are needed for your pipe dream? Do you realize that the vast majority of solar panels are produced by what amounts to slave labor, in factories powered by dirty coal? You have a false impression of the trade-offs, because you're fixated on top-down solutions, rather than ground-up solutions. Less than 1% of the land mass is still a MONUMENTAL undertaking, sucking resources from every OTHER endeavor. Your "climate targets" are based on junk science, and you've got this oblivious NMBY attitude that assumes all these wonderful things will just magically happen without massive costs to every other sector of human endeavor. You discount the environmental cost because you're fixated on one variable. The world isn't a place where you just pull levers and everything magically works out fine. Have you seen the cobalt mines? The lithium mines? Have you seen the black skies in China? Do the math. Better yet, just do the arithmetic.

Due to government intervention and corporate greed, automakers in the USA make cars with features no one wants at a price no one can afford. As for EVs, I will never own one, unless it's a little "runabout" for around town. But even then, I'm not at all comfortable with the environmental impact of the materials needed, nor the disposal/recycling of the lithium batteries. And the big push is based on a myth of catastrophic, man-made global warming, with plant food (CO2) named as the major culprit, which is ludicrous.

Elon has raised the ire of entitled elites. There will be nonstop hit pieces on Elon on ALL the captured media. That said, I expect Tesla sales to suffer, because he pissed off the insufferable, virtue-signaling champagne socialists that comprise a major fraction of his customers. And why do even I use the term "virtue signal" as a pejorative? In another context, I'd likely call it "setting an example" and consider it a good thing! I respect people who buy EVs in an earnest attempt to make the world a better place, but I think trying to replace internal combustion outside of urban areas is ridiculous. It totally makes sense for small, efficient EV bikes and 3- and 4-wheel runabouts. Distances are short. Electricity is everywhere. But going head-to-head with my pickup truck out in the Idaho panhandle? No contest. And they should let the market decide what the next iteration looks like, not bureaucrats with billionaires telling them to favor what the billionaires want. The best things in life and for life are achieved by LETTING them happen, not by MAKING them happen. 330 million people, all trying to figure things out and share what they learned are going to invent more and better things than those who would control everything can keep up with! This is a threat to control systems they want to keep and new ones they want to make.
