  1. Yes. Assessing Western capabilities and crumbling manufacturing base, it looked like there was no way we could win a conventional war on Russia's doorstep. My fear, since the smo began was that NATO would resort to nukes, possibly with a false flag tactical nuke, leading to an extinction-level chain reaction. The "stalemate" may be a calculation by Russia to continue attrition of the forces on its border without ever evincing a desire/ability to go any further. All the hopium being injected about Ukraine's ability to win actually helped the (preferred) war of attrition for the Russians. Putin's been in a box since taking over in '98. He had to re-build a broken nation, and a bloated military just wasn't in the cards if he wanted to right the ship. Halting NATO expansion was a near-run thing.
