  2. Two theories on updates: The reason we grow old and die is because critters who didn't were out-competed by "updated" critters. That's the contrary view. My more conventional view is similar to Rossman's. If your software was any good to start with, why does it need updating every week? I think it's more about stealing all your data during the "update." I feel the same way about Congress. If the laws they passed LAST session were worth a damn, why do they need to change everything THIS session? I'd be much happier if they simplified everything, butted out of most things, and met for a couple months in the winter to rubber-stamp last year's plan, which was pretty good. But "good" legislating means scrapping the "bad" legislation of yesterday, which is to say, there's no such thing as good legislation.
