The narrative was "Russia miscalculated!" but I just think the incursion enabled Russia to activate forces that could be used in defense of Russian soil, but could NOT be used in the SMO on foreign soil. Those forces took quite a beating, and needed stiffening-up by more experienced troops, but that's all part of it. Another part of it was pushing ECM and the elite drone units of which you speak to the front. All of these take time, and it would have been silly to divert all those forces to Kursk, before the fact.
