  1. I still kind of like the Waterseer idea, but on a larger scale and with much lower expectations. I've always liked that idea, ever since I read DUNE, and Herbert talked about wind traps and dew collectors. But thinking back, he kind of has it both ways. "It's cooler underground" plus "there's more moisture in the air on DUNE than the total absence of precipitation suggests." No accounting for the fact that the precipitation of water vapor will warm up the collector due to latent heat of the phase change. Necessary for all this is the dryness of the desert air, which causes temperatures to plummet after dark, which of course runs counter to the elevated moisture in DUNE's air, commented on by the planetologist Pardot Kynes. A desert planet where it never rains, yet has massive amounts of dew, because reasons.
