Into the rabbit hole we go! I wonder how much their ability to mass-produce batteries played into the Allied approach to the problem. Fascinating stuff. There's no end to the complexity. Firing spinning shells into varying winds, while the Earth spins underneath make artillery entirely too much for me.

@WilliamJones-Halibut-vq1fs : That's because the Triple Entente figured they could bring the USA into the fight, and they were right. It was America's weight that gave the an overwhelming advantage and an unconditional victory. And if USA were true to her principles, she never would have joined in, and Europe would've had to settle its own affairs, with a fair deal for both sides. Germany would've kept the Saar and Alsace-Lorraine, most likely. And been on a pretty strong footing in the '20s and '30s. Hard to say what would've happened, then. Without American meddling, warring families ('cuz that's what they basically were) would've had to compromise in the peace treaty. It was madness for Europe to go to war and madness for America to join them.
