  2. That's the trouble with judging history by our own modern values. Higher standards are the product of pretty universal prosperity. Throughout history, human life was filthy, brutal and short. The "evils" of industrialization, of which much has been made in the last 50 years, invariably leaves out the fact that child labor was often the difference between a child starving and a child surviving. By our standards, it's NASTY. By the standards of 100 or more years ago, the alternative to that "awful" exploitation was DEATH by starvation, or heavy manual labor from sunrise to sunset for kids of all ages, out in the countryside. Those kids were in the cities working in factories, because their parents couldn't support them in any other way and HAD to move to the city, or die.

Frank Herbert, in his DUNE series, made much of the Bene Gesserits' ability to access their genetic memories, recalling everything from their ancestors' lives up to the moment of conception of the next generation. By that knowledge, the "witches" knew for a fact that we are ALL descended from people who committed atrocities. Just had to go back far enough, and you'd find an ancestor who knocked somebody on the head and stole his goods and his woman.

  5. The Golden Horde of Genghis Khan took over most of the known world primarily because of drought and lack of fodder for their herds. It was "expand or die." Most of history is like that. We're entering a post-scarcity era in many respects. That eliminates a lot of the incentive to kill, which is why politicians and media spend so much time gaslighting us to make us afraid of mirages. We've gotta be scared - really scared - to think that going to war is a good idea.
