It took on a life of its own when Antifa were using violence and intimidation with the tacit approval of local police, and a lot of people - especially young alpha males - wanted to defend the people being bike-locked, especially the scenes from Berkeley and Portland. And they were smart about their crowd control and quite a few vets with some police training joined up, and they were very smart in how they protected the helpless, by not starting the violence, but acting like herd bulls, which made the Antifa look violent and weak at the same time. Then it became a habit, and guys who like adrenalin were brought into the circle, and things seem to have gone downhill.
