  1. The Process is the Punishment. That's how those who lust for power use the system against dissenters and whistle-blowers. We've simply given our governments too much power, after fighting a world war followed by a cold war to end totalitarianism. After winning these wars, we discovered that we had become the totalitarians in the process. We're no different than Germans, Italians or Russians. Slipping into authoritarianism and thence to totalitarianism is a sequence of small, innocuous steps that always lead to tyranny. It all starts with "Let us take care of you. We love you." It always ends with "Do as we say, or else."
