@johnbnyc64 There's a lot of commercial property losing money. Some of it is just techno-cultural. Why go into the city when UPS will bring it right to your door? Why go into the city or pay city rates for housing, when you can do the same work from 100 miles or 1000 miles away? Not everyone can do it, but everyone who can probably has a hankering to. But let's not kid ourselves about crime, either. But you are 100% correct that you can spend all day and night watching horrific stories and lose sight of the fact that they're all one-in-a-million or one-in-250,000 occurrences, and most people don't witness any of it. Where you're kind of off base is in explaining away the tent cities, the filth, and yes, the crime. Crime is up. Mayor Adams put National Guard in the subways. This isn't "business as usual." This is a civic structure that's crumbling. Democrats have had their run. It's time for something different. Short term, that appears to be Republican, but long term, I wish it were a lot more libertarian.

@GSPfan2112 Taxes. And regulations that make it harder and harder to do business. When you realize that the regulations are controlled by the big companies, then you realize that regulatiions are an illusion. However did we even live before those regulations? We evolved. Best practices. People did things better and better because it was in their business interest to do things (and treat their customers) better and better. Things just "invisibly" got better, because there wasn't a politician who could get up, give a speech, and say "I MADE THIS BETTER FOR YOU." Always something to point at as being good, but never point to the good people he put out of business or how much harder it got for everybody to make ends meet. Those effects are greater, but they're spread out in small ways over ALL the people, so they generally get swept under the carpet. But they all add up.

I don't think there are that many bad people in NYC or any other big city. I just think the bad people are emboldened by years of corrupt policing, the War on Drugs, and DeFund the Police narratives, pushed by or carried out by a very small number of repeat, career criminals in law enforcement, government, and society in general.

It's not happening across the country. It's happening in major metro areas that have been run by Democrats for decades. The rest of the country is watching the madness unfold and shaking its head at the insanity.

@johnbnyc64 Sounds like an honest take from someone who lives there. I agree that it doesn't take a very high percentage of insanity to fill up your feed with nothing but insanity, if that's what your focus is. I do think that the "traditional" way of looking at cities is slowly passing away. The civilizations that have been the most successful at building and maintaining huge metro areas did so at great cost to the liberty (legally and culturally) of their people. It takes an enormous amount of conformity and self-control to cram all those human beings into one place. This is oddly inconsistent with a nation of free people. But I'm very biased. I hated apartment living. Some people LOVE it. I hated not having a yard. I hated being cut off from Nature. Strangely, I didn't even KNOW I hated these things until I was free of them! I didn't realize how much of a weight I was carrying until the weight was lifted. It wasn't the noise or anything like that. In my case, it was always worrying about making noise, myself! I didn't realize how restricted I was until I was free of it.

After the last 3 or 4 years of total mismanagement and demonization of law enforcement, I shudder to think what kind of cop would come to NYC to work. They made it clear they don't care about your person or property, but they care a LOT if you try to do business when the politicians decide to lock everybody down. NYC will get a bunch of losers specializing in checking law-abiding citizens for vaccine passports and run at the sight of a BLM protester.

Don't complain about high prices and tell me about your $8/day coffee. You're either too lazy or too picky to make your own coffee in the morning. Like to drink coffee all day? Cool. There's this invention called a "thermos" that will serve up hot coffee for hours at a stretch. $8/day will buy you a really nice coffee maker of whatever sort you desire. LOL! I make enough money not to worry about the price of coffee, but MY coffee maker is a plastic funnel that I load up and plop on whatever cup or thermos I want filled. I know how much coffee and sugar to put in for any size container. I do it all in the comfort of my own home, with no waste of time. Paying somebody to make coffee for you is something rich people do. I'm a lot like my mother's parents. Learned how to survive on very little when I was younger, and most of those habits just stick with you. I could go out to eat every night, if I wanted, but I'd rather eat food made to my specific preferences in the comfort of my own home. I'd rather spend money on making my home an even better place to be than it already is. I got a slab poured under the pole barn, and now all I have to do is wrap it and I'll have a huge shop. Never had one of those of my own, before. It's gonna be sweet. I don't buy restaurant food, but once a month I'll spend hundreds of dollars and put on a barbecue. I'd much rather be in that big social setting surrounded by friends and family than be out somewhere surrounded by strangers, where it's hit or miss with the service staff (some Gen Zer who's feeling very put-upon that day).
