Mariners have always been more comfortable out of sight of land than people nowadays figure. Close to shore is more dangerous than over the horizon, due to natural and human hazards. Europeans fished and traded all up and down the American East Coast for a lot longer than the story of Christopher Columbus. Coins dating back to Roman times have been found in North America. Evidence of many visits since that time also exists. That's not to discount what Polynesians accomplished with the tools at their disposal. But I wouldn't sneer at Europeans, either. All are human. Some of each have a yearning to explore far horizons.
