Kings of the time knew full well the works of fiction of which monks were capable, having commissioned more than a few, themselves, to further their own ends. The word of one noncombatant is likely to be received with some skepticism. Also, even if Bela's guys wanted to implement Caprini's recommendations, fully, the kind of unity it would take might simply have been impractical, even with 100 daughters to marry off. Crossbowmen, or longbowmen would have made a big difference. I think armored knights could hold their own, but only if the Mongols were dumb enough to make it a pitched battle. With Chinese engineers, it wasn't enough to have fortresses (like it was for the Saxons versus the Danes).

  5.  @alex_smallet  I'll give that a "like," but I'd say it's a tossup between who suffered the most under Mongol dominion. Genghis hollowed out the Middle East like a gourd. Pretty much anyone who resisted him was genocided, be it the Russians in Kiev, the Kharesmians (sp?), or any city.
