Sometimes, through lack of planning or just bad luck, just keeping a roof over a family's heads and food on the table could very well exhaust a parent, to the point where they have nothing more to give. We used to have taboos and a social contract to ensure that most kids were raised by responsible parents with the means to actually do right by their children. Now we have a culture where "I love him" or "I love her" is all it takes, and it only has to last for one night of passion. We have a culture that doesn't care about much else.
