American potential WAS unlimited, back when the government was limited. Imagine the government's joy at discovering war as an excuse to exceed its legal limits. Uni-Party on war goes way back to the days when the Republicans were war hawks and even as the minority, they could push through defense spending with the votes of a handful of Scoop Jackson hawks amongst the Democrats. That was when Republicans still fought against massive social spending. By Bill Clinton's presidency, the Republicans joined the Democrats on the social spending side, and the Democrats joined the Republicans on the defense spending side. More spending wins re-election for both sides. There's a lot of posturing, but both sides want to take all our money and throw their weight around, abroad. Everything about the U.S. federal government is un-American, at this point. No liberty. No self-responsibility. "Obey and we will take care of you at others' expense" is the Uni-Party.

Command economies suck at everything except building weapons. Even that, they often get wrong, because of the top-down methods, and the fact that as the orders come down, every bureaucrat down the chain takes their cut. Pretty much all labor in China is slave labor. It's just a matter of degree and how well particular slaves are treated.
