@76verdee You made sense until you started your own regime-change rant. Forcible regime change anywhere only cements the most corrupt, most corruptible, and least competent and answerable to the wishes of people who would be fine if just left the hell alone.

It would've been easy to declare itself neutral and be friends with both East and West. It could've been the leading natural gas hub for most efficient distribution of our cleanest form of fossil fuel. It could've had a perfect industrial-agricultural balance. It could still own Crimea. But there's no way Russia could or would tolerate a hostile Crimea. Ukraine was and is a corrupt oligarchy that was and is a handy pawn for American 'leaders' who don't care what the cost or whom they hurt, because their own goals are so "good" and so "vital" that they will stoop to anything and stop at nothing to achieve them.

@xmaverickhunterkx UK's an excellent proxy, with looser rules on what they have to tell the people (or the parliament), plus they have no constitutional guarantees of free speech. Speech is at the pleasure of the government. Anything the government thinks is in its best interest is justification for arresting a truth-teller who dissents.
