  1. I remember reading the legends of Robin Hood and idolizing Richard the Lionhearted. But every time I bump into him in my lazy history travels, he's a big disappointment. The "aristocratic retinue" thing persisted in Britain long past its usefulness, with a lot of aristocrats finding their way into command positions for which they were ill-suited.
