I think what you called 'seekses' were "sea axes," which were broad, short-bladed stabbing weapons, used in the shield-wall versus shield-wall confrontations. According to Cornwell's historical fiction, anyway. You could certainly chop with one, too. It's the Britannic version of the Roman gladius, also used in shield-wall battles.
