  1. So the shield wall came after Thermopylae? If they were in a shield wall, they wouldn't run full tilt at the enemy, and lose all cohesion. But as the charging enemy reached the last couple steps, the shield wall could definitely surge the last 2 paces to meet them, rather than just standing still.
