Actual programmers need no sympathy. They can build things for people. That's a worthwhile skill. I don't think that's who's being laid off, anyway. But the "content moderators" produce nothing. They just shut people down. And I think lots of them, and lots of middle managers did get laid off. As far as coddling good programmers goes, the better they are, the less they end up having to do, so good IT people spend a lo t of time in break rooms. My job is similar in that the more experience and resources I build into what I do, the less work I have to do. But no one person could put together what I have or really operate it. It's a job tailored to a person who tailored himself to the job. Main reason I am so responsive to my clients is because long experience has taught me to anticipate virtually every pathology, sort of like a good computer programmer. When your organization is cheering the IT for all the overtime they're putting in, you know they're doing it wrong. They SHOULD be in the break room, browsing free treats.
