  1. Football helmets are also pretty behind-the-times. Rigid outer shell? I think even this semi-enlightened treatment of protective fight gear misses the main harm done by sparring and fighting, which is brain injury. I think the improved foam MADE for fighting is much better than the seat-cushion foam they seem to use. But I think the human toll is far greater from even the BEST gloves. Maybe your metacarpal SHOULD break, rather than moving a guy's whole head in ways it's not designed to move. I'm not a big fan of hand protection. The fight game $$$$ would be in danger, if fighters were injuring their hands. But as a guy who's broken just about every bone in his hands, it sucks, but at least my BRAIN isn't scrambled. But it's more important for the sport to protect the hands, because of $$$$.
