  2. The U.S. Government's overt or covert censorship and propagandizing at home dates back to World War II, at least. It's just harder to corral the Internet than it was AP, UPI, a handful of major papers and 3 or 4 national broadcasting networks, so it's a lot harder - hopefully impossible - to hide. They've never been better at manufacturing consent, but they've never been sloppier. Maybe things are so far gone, it doesn't matter if we know. It certainly seems that way.
