  2. People who make it to Yale on grounds of skin color end up feeling VERY out of sorts, because they're not really ready for those courses. I encountered something similar when I went to graduate school, from a small state college. I got one semester of abstract algebra. All my peers got a full year as undergraduates. It was a real struggle for me, but I never got promoted for social-engineering reasons by well-intentioned idiots. I knew what I was in for, and I stayed home working every weekend, while my peers came in every Monday talking about parties and ski trips. Eventually, I caught up. Many of my peers didn't make the cut for a PhD. I BARELY made the cut, but it was because I out-worked everybody else. It never occurred to me to protest my weakish background. I was a rock star at the state college. I was a work-hard nobody in grad school.
