Oh, I think you can make the case for dogs and wolves being able to utilize persistence-hunting methods. It's not so much about heat regulation, although the endangered wild dogs of Africa have an edge over all other 4-footed critters. But just staying on the trail of a prey animal for as long as it takes to wear them down works in all climes. They usually will go for something quicker, if they can, but they can single out just about any deer/moose/elk in the Northern Hemisphere and harry it to death, as I'm doing to you, now.

@prototypeone985 That's the thought that always grabs me. All the marine fossils in the desert.

Maybe the fact that they're preserved indicates some kind of cataclysm and the young were the first to succumb, and so we're witnessing extinction.

Or like the animalogic channel showing 5 cm per side on a square whose area it said was 5 square cm.

The small brain probably goes hand-in-glove with a very potent defense requiring little agility or thought. Like a porcupine or a skunk.

It's what we call "leaverite," as in "Leave 'er right where you found 'er."

Actually, I kind of doubt that's what goes through the "mind" of a lizard eating smaller members of its tribe. AVOIDING eating a smaller member of one's own species would be indicative of some kind of discrimination taking place. And who knows what goes through a lion who kills and maybe eats the cubs that were there before he came along? Maybe it's more that there's something about HIS cubs that causes him to refrain. We see how it impacts selection. We can see how such a gene would be passed on down the generations. But maybe those other cubs just have the stink of the old Pride Master on them. Or maybe he has to witness his own being born before there's any kind of bond.

@mimi45945 I don't care how hairy you are, you don't go out in subzero temps without a coat. The hairiest of us don't get much insulation benefit from our fur.

... and you realize the t.v. show runners aren't 1/10 as talented at the author of the book.
