  6. Putin was already deep in state-wide mafia schemes by the time he took the seat. He grew up as a spiteful thug, he was a mediocre KGB officer and admired the brutality of KGB as a gang he wanted to be in. There was never a possibility Putin would steer russians to prosperity and virtue. It was always revenge and reforming a semblance of empire to Putin.
