@daleinaz1 I'm not a chemist, but considering the quackery we've been fed about "global warming" and "ozone depletion", these busy-body-bureaucrats have to be kept an eye. That said, as I understand it, the BIGGEST problem with auto exhaust is Nitrogen compounds that degenerate into ozone, which is what stings the eyes. The nitrogen problem was solved with fuel injection and EGR (exhaust gas return), which "starved" some oxygen out of the mix to reduce the NOx's. On the other hand, catalytic converters are for just what you say -- burning up any unburned HCs/HydorCarbons (I don't know/don't care about CO). But unburned HCs aren't The Biggest problem with pollution, and are mostly fixed by "good tuning", which fuel injection does now automatically (as opposed to the pre-fuel-injection days when catalytic converters were made law). I think catalytic converters are a screwing of the car-buying public.

@daleinaz1 I heard NOx degraded to ozone, but whatever. We agree that the biggest problem is NOx, and that's taken care of by EGR. So who G.A.S. about HCs? They look like a stupid holdover from "natural aspiration". But those sh*t bureaucrats won't let go of it.
