not needed, can be used, but geometry rendering does not need to get messed with shaders, just cpu or a bit of gpu, wolfenstein++, w++, its all about the z-uv-buffer, spam or octree visible only rendering of bare polys, so count your polys, not the textures, textures is only your screen resolution translation through the textures, I'm sick and tired of the "one truth"
