While understand the calculus behind the policy -- specifically, that legal expenses due to liability lawsuits could end up costing the company more than stolen merchandise -- I also am of the opinion that it should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. No good deed goes unpunished. If I were him, though, I would put this on my résumé. There has to be someone reasonable enough to hire him, hopefully with an even higher salary for his troubles.
