It's shocking how many people I see daily who still believe, after many years of driving, that constantly shifting lanes to whichever one happens to be moving faster at that particular moment in time is the fastest way to reach your destination. As a nineteen-year-old, I've come to realize that staying in the lane that is most stable (that is, moving faster on average and has fewer periods of extreme slow-downs and speed-ups) will typically place you in front of the people who constantly shift between lanes. I should also note here that the "most stable" lane does change periodically, so changing lanes once in a while often helps if you're aware of what's going on. Note: This theory exclusively applies to moderately heavy traffic. In light traffic speeding and shifting lanes frequently will very likely place you significantly ahead of everybody else.
