Only humans are stupid enough to invent magical, invisible deities who give them commandments and kill one another over them. This isn't a straw-man of religion--this is religion.

@drcokepepper I think the point of the science vs. religion debate is not that science can know everything (it can't, we're stuck at Planck time when the universe was first created for example), but that so much of what religions first believed was proven wrong. We weren't directly created by the hand of God, we evolved. We're not the at the center of the solar system, the galaxy, or the universe. We're just on some random speck of dust in an incomprehensibly big universe. And everything else--the existence of a soul, heaven and hell, angels and demons, free will, and even an almighty creator who cares about us--is just superstition. I'm not saying for a fact that it isn't true, but it's becoming increasingly more difficult to believe in light of everything we now know about the world around us.

@tiddybagel Hm really? Because that's how some people interpret their supposedly "divinely inspired" holy texts. "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live," for example. Some of them are pretty straightforward. "Thou shalt not have any other gods before me." This sounds like an excuse to kill anyone who isn't of the same faith. That sounds very tolerant, doesn't it?

@tiddybagel LOL nihilism, how about humanism and cosmic spirituality? We're on this rock flying through the universe and our existence is pretty much meaningless except what we ascribe to it, so it doesn't get much more free than that. Let's make the most of it, for everyone. Now that's my purpose in life.

@komoriaimi No it's not. There is no "stubborn atheist" position, because there is literally zero conclusive evidence for the veracity of any religion in existence. The vast majority of us would convert if we saw a reason to, such as evidence that is irrefutable or cannot be explained any other way than positing the existence of the supernatural. We just don't believe in what we can't observe. That's both the rational position and the default position any person should take. An infant raised on an island all alone wouldn't have any concept of a deity, and would only believe ships exist if it saw one. That's how we should proceed as a society as well.
