@ethanbolen4425 Without the Renaissance, yes. It was because of people like Leonardo da Vinci that we have modern medicine. It's a direct outgrowth of science. If we relied on religion for medical treatment, we would give cancer patients bloodletting and Parkinson's disease victims exorcisms. Oh, and "heal" them with prayer.

@Jam That's not what I said at all. I said the petty superstitious doctrines of religion don't hold a candle to the majesty that is scientific progress and discovery. We could become a better society almost instantly if we based our morals on scientific principles (i.e. humanism) instead of the major world religions. But one thing has always stood in the way: the Emperor has no clothes.

@clarkstrange2142 I suppose, if you consider yourself a "libertarian" as I do (with possible disagreements on economics), we could form an alliance. But be warned: nothing upsets me more than those who think they can force their "morals" on everyone else simply because they are of a certain creed. This country was founded on "Don't Tread on Me" and "Live Free or Die," and I'll do everything in my power to keep it that way.

@Jam And much of the West, especially Europe, are becoming largely secular. Are they worse off as a result? Of course not, because they've outgrown their need for religion and embraced humanism instead.

@clarkstrange2142 You don't even know the meaning of the word "racism." You have no idea how much harm the Bible has caused Africans, African-Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Aborigines, and people of the Middle East. All at the hands of white Christians who thought they were promoting the one "true" faith. Thomas Jefferson literally coined the term "separation of church and state," meaning that these two domains remain SEPARATED from one another. So not only are churches not taxed, but they don't preach THEIR morals in our government. But if we held to this doctrine, the Republican Party would lose its entire platform. And I hope they do. Of course Jefferson was a deist; look what happened to those who didn't believe in a supreme being of any kind in those days (e.g. David Hume). But he was far from being the theocrat most Christian conservatives today want to paint him as. He was anything but, and that's why I honor him in my profile picture. In my mind, I'm continuing his legacy by fighting for the very thing he wrote in a letter over 200 years ago. You want to slander atheists as "rac*st," but the hypocrisy couldn't be more staggering. Exodus 21 has done far more harm to advancing racial equality than any atheist has ever dreamed of. Have a nice day.

@Jam Hm, yes. But only if you accept evolution, the Earth being 4.5 billion years old, the universe beginning around 13.72 billion years ago, the impossibility of miracles, the ineffectiveness of prayer, and the possibility of a multiverse. Other than that, they are totally compatible.

@clarkstrange2142 I'm not sick of the anti-Christian rhetoric at all. In fact, I'm enjoying every second of it. It's about time this nasty religion has repented for its sins. But the key flaw in your logic is that Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, etc. did not k*ll in the name of atheism. Those atrocities were committed in the name of fulfilling a communist "utopia" that (evidently) never came to pass. But in them you and I have a common enemy. They were authoritarians, and as a libertarian I am on the complete opposite side of the spectrum from them. I believe in the power of social democracy, whereby social programs could be provided for the welfare of the people and lessen the wealth inequality via taxation. Some of the most secular countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark) consistently rank at the top on happiness indexes and overall prosperity. The U.S. could climb up there as well if we work to root out corruption and overthrow the ideology that has hindered our social progress for decades: conservatism.

@clarkstrange2142 Well your "statistics" would seem to contradict the majority-secular states I just mentioned. It honestly makes no sense to me that religious folk would be "happier," because the concept of an eternal afterlife only cheapens the life we have now. If you're an atheist and you believe this is the only life you'll ever have, then you're motivated to spend every minute of it being happy. And indeed I think this is the case in the Scandinavian countries, of which I would like to see the U.S. model itself after in my lifetime.

@carbon273 Miracles, by definition, violate the laws of nature. Such examples include talking snakes and donkeys, bread raining down from the sky, sea waters being parted, humans walking on water, and a man being raised from the dead. Since these things have not been observed in the modern world, they must be scrutinized very heavily. I would consult David Hume for a more detailed explanation of this concept.
