What we should be doing is taking psychedelics. He would realize the pathetic nature of his existence if he had the chance to go on a trip, and also almost certainly realize the innate value of human life. We don't need religion and a deeply flawed code of ethics to help people behave morally.

@Jeremy Dionisio You can't believe in something that doesn't exist. You might as well be saying to yourself that you're successful because of your belief in unicorns. Or the tooth fairy. Or Santa Claus. It makes absolutely zero sense. And by the way, we don't have free will. Our actions are entirely predetermined by environmental factors that cause our neurons to fire in specific patterns, a concept known as determinism. You should look into it, and start examining the real world from an objective point of view.

He's a figment of the imagination. And before you use the ontological argument on me, humans conceived of fire-breathing dragons and those aren't real either.

@Jeremy Dionisio You're not even worth having a conversation with. Seriously, stop drinking the Kool-Aid and wake up. God is a fantasy, and nothing more. Learn about god of the gaps. Religion survived because it provided an evolutionary advantage: It explained then-unknown phenomenon (what causes lightning? Oh, the "thunder god") while simultaneously providing the basis for a moral code in primitive man. It was dual-purpose, but now both of those functions have expired. God is utterly useless--in fact, god is worse because religious belief is counterproductive. It has hindered social progress every step of the way, from burning witches to countless Inquisitions to handicapping scientific development to the Trans-Atlantic slave trade to the baseless attacks on birth control. Its expiration date is long overdue. Humans can do much, much better and I hope to see more of that progress in my lifetime. We're witnessing the effects of a genuine attempt at a scientifically sound moral code in the Nordic countries. It's conservatism that's holding the U.S. back from that kind of social progress, driven by the belief in a book riddled with atrocities and contradictions, and a deep-seated and unfounded notion that humans can't behave morally without it.

@Jeremy Dionisio I exist because I am made of matter and have a well-defined nature bound by limitations. The concept of "god" in the Christian religion is utterly incoherent and unknowable by its nature. Therefore, it can not be proven to exist. Don't try this tactic of universal skepticism on me; it won't work. Like I said, I understand reality much better than you do.

@Jeremy Dionisio Hm, maybe because Zeus was the god of thunder? And so was Thor? Maybe those are good indicators. If what the ancients say were true, we would still be witnessing the effects they were describing. But science has progressed too far for that. We know why volcanoes erupt, the ground shakes, and lightning strikes down from the sky. And it isn't because the gods are mad. This is the god of the gaps I was describing. Today, the gaps are free will (or the illusion of it), consciousness, the origin of the cosmos, the beginning of life, and so-called "objective" moral values. And each one of these fails to stand up to scrutiny when the concept of an all-mighty "creator" is proposed. It didn't solve anything 2,500 years ago, and it won't solve anything today. Only science is capable of solutions.

@Jeremy Dionisio Mmm, wrong again. Reality is observed through the senses. Nothing bypasses that, because that is how all knowledge is acquired. The one exception is innate concepts (such as instinct), but humans clearly aren't programmed to believe in a deity. That is brought about through superstitious thinking, and then our children get indoctrinated into it. A person could live their whole life as an atheist if both of those occurrences could be avoided. Clearly, this "god" wants his fallible human followers to do all his dirty work for him.

Humans are perfectly capable of making laws conducive to human flourishing without the need for an almighty deity that doesn't exist. It's called secular humanism. I suggest you look into it. Try naming me a moral action that I can't take as a nonbeliever. You can't do it. But you consider stoning gay people a moral and obligatory action. There is no room for further discussion.

@Jeremy Dionisio No, we do not have a time machine to confirm. As a matter of fact, time travel to the past is impossible per Albert Einstein. However, we can deduce what might have happened based on probabilities. So tell me, which is more likely? That the whole natural order was suspended, or that a Jew was under a misapprehension or told a lie? If you're rational, you can arrive at the correct answer. But people of faith aren't known for their strong endorsement of reason.

@Jeremy Dionisio No, I have not. You know what that is? It's a magic trick. Which means it's FAKE. Nothing Harry Houdini ever did defied the laws of physics, and nothing anyone else does will either. You can break glass with high frequencies outside the human range of hearing. It's been done numerous times before. There is nothing "paranormal" about it. If there was, scientists would be studying it relentlessly.

@Jeremy Dionisio Wow. Just... wow. I just believe everything falls within the purview of scientific discovery. It's called naturalism. This really isn't that hard to understand. I guess I shouldn't expect someone who believes in fairy tales to grasp this concept, though. Because something can be imagined doesn't make it real. I would believe in zombies if I saw one; I would believe in ghosts if I saw one; and I would believe in "god" if he/she/it contacted me personally. But this so-called "creator" is too lazy to do that I guess. No, he wants ME to contact HIM first. That's called preparing a trap. And I'm not about to fall into it--at least, not again (I was raised a Jehovah's Witness). If this "god" really was all-good and all-powerful, he would reach out to ME to save my soul from condemnation. So far, that hasn't happened. And I don't expect it to. The best he's got is allowing his fallible human followers to do his dirty work for him, and such a designer is not worthy of my reverence.

I probably know MORE about this subject than you do! The cosmological argument? All you do is push the problem back one step further! Who created god?! It's just as likely we're living in a multiverse, if not more so because that explanation actually makes scientific sense! The teleological argument? That just confuses "order" with design! The "moral" argument? I don't believe there are moral absolutes! We have developed an inner sense of "morality" because of our evolutionary past and we have been conditioned to be so by society. It's all easily explained without the assumption of a supreme being who is "all good" (which, by the way, is the exact opposite of the capricious son of a b** in the Old Testament). So what have YOU got? Go ahead, give me some "evidence" for this all-powerful "creator" that answers prayers and cares who I sleep with and in what position.
