  1. Well it makes sense if you think about it. Petty theft should not be a felony. To use a timely analogy, I don't think Kevin in Home Alone stealing a toothbrush makes him a felon. But the line is drawn too high, I'll grant you that. Maybe about $200 would be more reasonable. But the police should investigate either way, because this is getting out of hand.

  3. Uh, what do you mean by that, exactly? That they should be allowed to shoot on sight? Somehow I don't have the feeling that's what you meant, because that seems a little extreme. No reasonable person would say that being shot is an appropriate consequence for smuggling a toothbrush. If you mean that store owners should be able to "steal" their stuff back, then I'm 100% on board. But I would rather see them dealt with by our justice system, because that's what it's for.

  4. "Lock 'em up!" is what I say. Or at least make them pay a fine and restore the stolen goods if it's their first offense. Then while you're at it, make sure they've got a place to stay and a decent job, or they'll just recidivize when they get out. We can't have riff-raff running around all the time and doing this. There's usually a reason --- and if there isn't, then they're psychopaths who should be put into an institution and looked after. But consequences are not optional. Period.
