This is abhorrent. But in hypercapitalist America, where we let you die if you can't afford health insurance (or go bankrupt), or saddle you with student debt for life EVEN IF you go bankrupt, this is to be expected. Some say this is the greatest country in the world. My reply always is, "For who?"

Although the Exectutive (and therefore the President) does have the power under the 1965 Higher Education Act to do what is called a "rolling student debt elimination," effectively canceling all student debt indefinitely. I don't think Biden has the guts to do it, though. Why are we one of the few developed countries that doesn't offer tuition-free higher education? Because we allow universities to operate like businesses and politicians are more concerned with serving their military-industrial complex, big pharmaceutical, and corporate donors than materially helping the American people. That's why.
