Please, for the sake of everyone's sanity on public forums, such as the Internet, refrain from spewing religious claptrap and theological gobbledegook unless it is directly relevant to the topic under discussion. Thank you in advance for your compliance.

@onetwo6039 98% of abortions occur before 12 weeks gestation. At 12 weeks old, the fetus isn't even 2 inches long. And it can't feel pain until 18 weeks. Get your damn priorities straight.

Texas doesn't care about freedom. This is a symptom of theocracy, not reasoned argumentation using scientific facts. The FACTS are that a fetus cannot feel pain (reflexes are not indicative of a pain response; the nervous system isn't developed) until 18 weeks gestation. So the only means of justifying OUTLAWING abortion before 18 weeks is to argue that, somehow, our species has some special significance OR to guarantee that all children who are born live a life worth living --- a task that is next to impossible. The situation gets even worse for the conservative when one considers that we do much, MUCH worse things to fully grown animals in factory farming --- hanging them by their hind legs and slitting open their stomachs while they're still alive, for instance. It is all but IMPOSSIBLE to justify that while at the same time maintaining that abortion (prior to 18 weeks) is immoral. There is no basis for this other than speciesism, or the gross misuse of an ancient book written by desert goat herders who thought the Earth was flat.

Hopefully it doesn't. If you can give me a good reason to believe abortion (before 18 weeks gestation when the fetus can't suffer) is immoral WITHOUT reference to one or another religious text, I'll eat my words. You can't do it, it's impossible. Peter Singer already dismantled such arguments over a decade ago. Read his book Practical Ethics.
