Actually it does, because if this variant (or a similar one in the future) outcompetes all the others because it can spread much more rapidly, then eventually the virus will weaken over time and essentially become another strand of the flu (there's obviously a limit to jist how much it can weaken, because the influenza virus has been with us for decades now and the mortality rate has changed very little). It almost certainly won't disappear, but it will eventually fade out of the public consciousness and the news cycles because the death toll will have dropped so drastically. It also helps that the people who have survived it once will make up a giant portion of the population, and all those who may have succumbed to it have either been vaccinated or taken out. Combine the two, and I'm willing to bet that no one will even be talking about this in five years --- or if they do, it'll be about what is happening now. That's evolutionary biology for you.

@njm5991 You know people (read: religious nutjobs) have been saying this for the last 2,000 years, right? This is not an original comment by any stretch of the imagination. And guess what: You'll be wrong, just like all the rest of 'em. If there are any "end times," it'll be because humanity brought it upon themselves (think climate change). I guess there is a silver lining to that mushroom cloud, huh?
