Meh so what? Tens of thousands have died from the flu every year, that has never been news. Why should it be news now?

@zeroxlulu The flu killed almost 80,000 in 2018, how many news reports did you hear about that? Oh wait don't answer I think I can guess: ZERO. Yet 110,000 people almost all of whom were already knocking on death's door anyway is news. Give me a f***ing break. If you're scared stay home. You nor anyone else, including politicians, has the right to tell me what I can or cannot do or where I am not allowed to go. As an adult I can take responsibility for my own safety thank you very much.

@zeroxlulu Does the "right precautions" mean being forced to wear a garment that restricts the flow of oxygen into the body as well as the exhalation of potentially dangerous gases like carbon dioxide out of the body? Also, in case you were that gullible (which I'm sorry but you sound like the type of person who is), hospitals are given a monetary incentive to report anyone who died while infected with COVID-19 as the virus having been the cause of death regardless of whether the virus actually contributed in any way to their demise. Which means the death toll is likely VASTLY over reported, especially compared to the tolls of similar diseases like the seasonal flu.

@zeroxlulu Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Japanese people wear masks all that often. Maybe in Tokyo when the air pollution is really bad they do, but that's a fraction of the overall Japanese population and even then it's only during certain times of the year.

@zeroxlulu Of course Japanese people are going to wear masks like crazy right now. The whole world is. And I never said masks are a bad idea for those who are sick; they are not. As a matter of fact anyone who IS carrying a contagious respiratory illness and has to go out into public or meet with other people SHOULD wear a mask to protect others. Where I draw the line is forcing HEALTHY people and those who haven't tested positive for COVID to wear a mask at all times when out in public. That just seems a bit excessive to me. I understand if businesses want to enforce it to keep their employees protected, but I think any politician doing the same for spaces open to the public (especially those that are outdoors like parks and beaches) is overstepping his or her authority.
