  1. ​ @unbreakable7633  Ethical philosophies are not on an equal footing with religious beliefs. They may not be scientific (hence the term "philosophy"), but they are logically consistent and coherent. No religious moral code that I'm aware of has achieved logical consistency. The reasons are numerous, but I shall offer just two to illustrate the point: 1) the Euthyphro dilemma (does God command something because it is good, or is it good because God commanded it?), and 2) irreconcilable contradictions within religious texts that render the derivation of any consistent moral code an impossibility. Thus, one requires a secular code of ethics, of which only three are dominant among modern philosophers: a) Aristotle's virtue ethics, b) Kantian deontology, and c) utilitarianism. Of the three, the latter by far makes the most intuitive sense to me.

  3. ​ @carlpittenger  Correction: making abortion illegal hurts women. Some will always be desperate enough to have an abortion by any means necessary, even if it puts their lives at risk.
