Tywin Lannister There's a huge difference between "social programs" and "socialism." The United States survived the New Deal and didn't become a socialist nation, and neither Obamacare or Medicaid got us anywhere close to that. However, there is a distinction to make between the "modern liberal" and the "progressive": the former thinks America could be made a better place if we expand government a bit to accommodate the needs of the poor and disadvantaged (something I don't necessarily object to, though I oppose the idea of expanding government influence and power in general), and the latter wants to "fundamentally transform" (or destroy) the entire American system in favor of one that pretends to care about the needs of the poor, but is a disguise for socialism and tyranny. Some like to throw around this term of "democratic socialism," but the truth is it's tyranny either way. The only difference is that a 51% majority (who are often self-serving or uneducated) dictate to the other 49% what they are allowed or not allowed to do. I think the difference between liberalism and progressivism is a fine line that, if it must be walked, should be walked carefully. My motto is this: "You can vote your way into socialism, but you have to shoot your way out."

Tywin Lannister It's more free for sure. The notion that "a few rich" control all the wealth is absurd. If that were true, then college dropouts like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg would have never become billionaires from one great idea (the OS and social media, respectively). Perhaps the most important aspect of a capitalist economy is that it incentivizes hard work. In a socialist one, you'll earn money no matter HOW much effort you put into your job. You know what that does? It incentivizes laziness. And guess how the government will make you work harder... Yep, they put a gun to your head. Say goodbye to freedom. This has been proven again and again in the Soviet Union, Mao's China, Cuba, North Korea, and now in Venezuela. You want to tell me that they got socialism wrong THAT many times?! How many times have we gotten capitalism wrong? Go ahead and give me a number, I'll wait. Capitalism is our only option because it WORKS. And it's the only one that is compatible with our Constitution as it was written. Sorry fella, but using the government to re-distribute wealth never works out for the people in the long-term. You'll have had to actually LIVE in a Socialist country to truly understand that. I'd rather just learn from their mistake.

@OrvilleRedenbache007 Possibly. However, the most common reasons for evil monopolies existing is actually because of government and its interference in the market. Lobbying groups from the "bad" monopolies (the ones that provide a poor good or service) are able to influence politicians to write laws that make it harder for a new competitor to form or grow. "Good" monopolies have the wealth to do this too, but it's not as much of a concern because they made (and presumably are continuing to make) a quality product or service. This explains my reasoning for a free market economy, as the government not being allowed to interfere with the private affairs of its citizens makes lobbying a useless venture. And I believe the word you were looking for is "plutocracy," not "kleptocracy." I do believe there should be some kind of anti-trust laws that prevent against a single company monopolizing the entire system, but the odds of that occurring (and a CEO gaining total control as you suggest) are so small it would hardly ever be put to use.

@MuchCow9000 That's what happens under a socialist regime. You use the government to control the flow of money, they'll end up with all the money. Where there is money, there is power. Hence why socialism = authoritarianism.
