  1. Driving is an essential task for most Americans, owning a military-grade weapon is not. 16 to 18-year-olds have demonstrated remarkable competence at handling a motor vehicle. Many are also adept at shooting a gun -- but given the choice between being free to travel or owning a weapon, the vast majority would choose the former. And I'm of the opinion that if an individual has graduated with a high school diploma (or equivalent, such as a G.E.D.) and is a legal U.S. resident, his or her right to participate in the democratic process should be respected. But I am in full agreement about signing up for the military. 18 is too young to fight in war, save only for self-defense (i.e. from invasion). And the draft, in my view, is a deeply authoritarian measure that has outlived its purpose. It should have been abolished long ago.
