  2. Well you have to know statistics pretty well to succeed in the social sciences, but most likely not Calculus. Although I'm fairly certain you're thinking of the humanities (history, philosophy, anthropology, language arts, etc.)... And in that case, your criticism is valid. Universities would have to look at what your intended major is and determine which scores (Math or English) are most relevant.
