@Joseph-cf2wd You seem to think that children are the property of their parents. That's just not true. If it were, there would be no need for Child Protective Services (which Texas seems to be making much use of these days). Should a child be refused lifesaving medical treatment because the parent doesn't want them to receive it (perhaps they believe in "faith healing" instead)? Should a child be forced to spend 18 years minimum in the closet because his or her parents are bigots, markedly increasing their risk of depression and su*cidal ideation? Should a child be refused a proper education, therefore having a lifelong impact on their future financial and professional success? How is this any different from girls in Afghanistan, apart from the degree of severity and avenues for retaliation? Where do we draw the line between parental authority and the interests of the child, if at all? The inability to provide a coherent response to this last question is strongly indicative of a lack of any thorough analysis of this subject. I know mine: the child is afforded certain basic rights, including to healthcare and a formal education, in addition to those ensuring his or her basic security (adequate access to food, protections from abuse, etc.) -- I would very much like to know yours.
