  1. Freedom was a major theme in American society from the very beginning. Slaves weren't free because they weren't American citizens at the time. The same is true for the so-called "genocide" of Native Americans, even though it was disease (not people) that wiped out nearly 90% of their population. It's always been the prospect of heading west, into new and yet undiscovered territory, that has kept the ideal of American freedom alive. I think this guy needs to read a history textbook.
