  1. Ok, Smeagle a.k.a. Gollum was not a "full-fledged villain." He actually assisted Frodo and Sam in their quest to reach Mordor, even though he abandoned them once they entered the spider's cave. No, the villain in this story without a doubt is Sauron. Gollum was too conflicted to qualify for this list.
