  1. I agree there really shouldn't be word for non-belief in some deity or deities, except perhaps "nonbeliever." Unfortunately, throughout history organized religion has had such a powerful influence on people's lives (unlike golfing or skiing) that not believing any of it was considered revolutionary. And regrettably that attitude persists to this very day, as a majority of the world's population believes in a deity of some kind. These ideas (or "memes" as Dawkins calls them) are hard to dispense with, and those who have done so successfully have been labeled by the religious majority as "atheists." So the word continues to be used, and often with a negative connotation attached to it. I would love to see a world in which not believing in God is the equivalent of not believing in the Tooth Fairy or not playing golf, but that's sadly not the one we're currently experiencing. Alas, except for parts of Europe and Communist Asia, the religious are in the majority and/or have all the power, and anyone who isn't a believer is viewed with condescension. That's the depressing reality of the world we are living in today.
