Tourists are beginning to wake up and realise there is more to Japan than the Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka triangle. They are venturing to other parts of the country, slowly but surely. There is so much to see and experience in this wonderful country. Please don't go to Tokyo and believe you've experienced Japan, be adventurous, explore further afield. You will be rewarded with amazing memories. As tourists spread out the current hotspots will be less busy, easing pressure on the ever patient locals. Love and respect to Japan and the people.

@peternole5083 Hi. That's a tricky one to answer, I'll share my approach. Japan is made up of 4 main islands. It's divided into 8 regions with 47 prefectures. It's diverse, enthralling, enriching with a lot of beauty. Personally I like to explore, I've never considered a base. To help you I'd say this. Japan is unique, it will blow your senses. To have the best experience in Japan demands a lot of research. Perhaps you'll then find your sweet spot to base yourself, or you'll be more mobile and explore wide and far. I hope this helps. Cheers.

@fady5642 I guess this will be your first time to Japan. More than likely you'll fly into, and depart from Tokyo. So how about this loop. Tokyo - Kanazawa - Takayama (you'll be in the Japanese Alps) - Kyoto (Osaka is nearby so you can do a day trip to Osaka from Kyoto) - return to Tokyo. Try to spend the most time in Kyoto, it's special. Here's a example itinerary. Get over any jetlag in Tokyo, let's say 3 nights there. Kanazawa 3 nights. Takayama 3 nights. Kyoto 5 nights. Tokyo 2 nights. That's 16 nights total and it offers up a lot of variety, exposing you to many facets of Japan, traditional and modern.

@sebastianbecher8927 It seems your heart is set on it, so you will visit Ine and Onomichi.

@peternole5083 Oops! Ijust reread your words. You're asking for good places to base yourself, not just one good place. Apologies. But, again, research is the key. What you personally like, what you're interested in, what you want to do, what you want to see, will determine the prefectures you will visit in Japan. As you research you'll learn about Japan, it's fascinating. And that knowledge enriches the experience of your visit. And it's that knowledge you need in order to determine the bases that fit you just right. Happy searching.

@jazyzamp3056 What a good choice of places, you'll love it. You'll create great memories, experience some serious magic, and grow as a person. Happy travels to you.

@TotallyNotBrandon True. But here's something for you to consider. The 'tourist traps' are there for a reason. A country, not only Japan, establishes well identified tourist areas and routes. Then they establish, at great effort and expense, infrastructure that todays tourists expect. Small businesses pop up to cater to the tourist. It's all about convenience, comfort, and the experience. Mass tourism exists because a country meets the needs of the tourist. It's not always been this way. Decades ago these conveniences didn't exist, you could go to a country and experience it in its raw form. Now it's difficult to experience life as the locals live, you experience life as the tourist lives. It's just not the same. But the 'raw' experience is still achievable, it just takes a little effort to achieve. And that's part of the journey.

@idealicfool Somewhat hasty my friend. Perhaps you should read my comment again because, although your words are true, your reply is not quite relevant to the topic. Peace.

@devanshsaraf4142 For anyone reading @devanshsaraf4142's reply, necropolis is from the Greek word nekropolis, meaning city of the dead. I'll be in Tokyo in November, I imagine myself walking around thinking "I see dead people!" OMG!!! 😱🫣

@Vicente-en2zx Their english is better than our japanese. As for everyday communication translator apps are sufficient. The Japanese people are very patient when you try speaking basic Japanese, they actually like you to make the effort even if you make mistakes. They see your efforts as a sign of respecting their culture and respecting them. If you're relaxed about it you can have fun with it and make heartfelt connections with the people, even if just for a short moment.

@Vicente-en2zx Hi. I don't think this comment was meant for me.

@donbasuradenuevo Interesting comment. But here's a kind word for your consideration. Wealth does not equate to integrity my friend. Wealth allows you to do more in life. Integrity is the strength to stop yourself doing the wrong you know you're capable of doing. Having money, or not having money, we're all capable of doing wrong. Having wealth doesn't give you the strength to stop yourself doing wrong. Money doesn't magically transform someone into a 'quality' person. Peace to you.
