  2. "Harvard" said makes me think automatic racism. The recordings vary in experiences and impressions which I'm sure are even more varied than those presented. I remember listening as a child in the 1950s to an old black man who claimed to have been born into slavery, and he made it sound like it was not any more harsh than for anyone else doing manual farm labor even into 20th century Texas. Remember, slave ownership was not as widespread as is implied in movies. In fact, much of the southern racism of the late 19th to mid 20th centuries was because poor white and freed slaves were trying for the same jobs, with a lot of resentment from both groups. I have always been an opportunity based on skill kind of guy. Now I find out that means I'm a white supremacist. Funny, it's only elites from the northeast and California who have said that to me. I wonder what one of my great grandparents (the son of a freed slave and white man) would have to say.
