It is always amazing how quickly people forget the aftermath of a specific event. Good report. Thank you.

I remember thinking how weird it was to learn my grandmother was a flapper. When I got older and remembered her I thought, "Yep, I can see that."

My mother-in-law was a German child during the war. I'm always amazed remembering stories she told of living under Nazi occupation, and what experiences she probably never told. After the war her family lived in the east so came under Soviet occupation until she and a friend escaped in 1955. As previously noted, it is amazing the similarities we see today, not only in Europe but around the globe. Unfortunately we children of the greatest generationn failed to get the lesson through to our kids and grandkids. Yes, the repeating of history is a result of not learning lessons from our past. The only difference is now we see it live on television and the Internet.

I reported on a "reality show" in the early days, and learned how unreal they often are. Good report.

It is always interesting how so many family businesses go out because of younger generations that never got their hands dirty doing the original work.

Man, I even had Mulligan stew as a kid. I suppose it was a carryover from my parents. The thing we have to remember is depression eating was about being satified with not going hungry rather thanflavor and taste. Man, we certainly are spoiled today.

Thank you for this report. It is so important that people today learn from the past and keep things in perspective. Plus it offers ideas of how to deal with our own trials.
55
This is what I played as a kid. I didn't want to be like ever other 5-year-old cowboy.
53
My grandfather would say little, but when he did I remeber thinking, "Oh no way." Yep, growing up and learning history (plus a few years service) changes understanding.
44
So, it sounds like Charles originted the Mel Brooks line, "It's good to be king."
40
Very interesting. I always enjoy your "origins of" presentations.
27
SNL has long outlasted its viability. I remember when it was smart satire hitting all sides and actually funny, not it is just another platform for ultra liberism.
24
I am so fortunate to have been a young child in time to listen to elders who remembered life before automobiles and air travel were common.
20
I've often wondered if the Gilded Age would have been such had there been income and business taxes at that time. Then again, consider the political, business and celebrity elites we see today with their detachment from the rest of us.
19
I can remember all this like it was yesterday, but I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday. Sigh, in many ways even the 70s made more sense than today.
18
Good report. Interesting how these big stars had very simple final meals. Breaks the image one would receive from Hollwood.
18
Definitely never was my style, but you gave a good report. Thanks.
16
Always amazing what happens behind the scenes of mainstream history. Another fine report. Thank you for your detailed work.
15
Americans who have never really seen a soviet or communist run country need to do so. I'm not talking about a controlled tourist trip or a couple of weeks in a (once again controled) religious mission visit. I mean living among the population for at least six months. Then, they will appreciate the free states of the U.S.A.
14
Interesting. Some times good things do come out of tragedy. I am, however, disappointed that you did not include the 1900 Hurricane that destroyed Galveston, Texas, and the rebuilding of that island city into what it is today.
13
Man, it takes me back. I was officially an adult and among the first 18-year-olds to ever vote. I remember most of this and in comparison to today it sadly seems tame. BTW, Richard Nixon could have won without Watergate. Sadly, because of one stupid move people forget the good things he brought about during his nearly one and a half term.
13
I wonder if 161 years from now medical professionals will think us as barbaric. However, from what I understand of contemporary med school grads we may be moving back to skill levels of the 1860s.
12
Seems silly now. I knew people who had "end times" level food storage and defense arsenals. I took a wait and see approach. Sure glad I didn't panic.
11
Interesting report. I am impressed how her daughter gained her own fame as an actor and in a much more moral manner. I always wonder if some of that was intentional.

I just had a crazy throught. I miss the days when we knew what to expect of crime and criminals. It seemed far more peaceful. Told you it was crazy.
8
I learned so much about this from my wife's family. Even I -- typically hard core -- was shocked. I love my wife (yes a legal naturalized citizen), and miss my schwiegermutter.
8
Have you ever looked into how Taft used being president to secure a place on the Supreme Court? Also the broken relationship between Taft and Roosevelt.
8
People are so socially sanitized today. I miss the days that made us learn to be responsible ... like it or not.
7
Palm trees not being native to Los Angeles surprised me. However in a city known as being fake anyway it makes sense. I hope the innocent residents there can regain control.
5
I'm glad I never got into so-called reality shows. First off, how real is it with cameras, sound systems, directors and producers watching everything? Why didn't you cover "Swamp People" or "Duck Dynasty"? at least they are real people.
5
Great suggestion.
5
Aw, I posted the same, but you beat me to it. ha, ha, ha
5
I have a very rare neurological disease. I am a research subject and have willed my brain to the UT Health Glenn Biggs Institute. I recommend organ donors to help people in the future.
5
Biggest positive moment of 1977 was the birth of my son.
4
I'm so sorry for your experience. Please know there was a purpose you may already understand, but will as you age. Blessings.
4
Marketing promotion or not, I'm glad I grew up when the pledge and prayer were both allowed in public school. I suspect individual prayer remains before any algebra exam.
4
Sorry, I had to laugh with first hand understanding. In my case a few years after I left and it took all my stuff, I found the right woman for me. Now 30 years later I'm healed. Good luck.
4
Good report. I don't know whether to give them credit for being as bad as bad guys, or say I glad men are not being vilified all the time. I only recognize two genders so there are obviously good and bad of both even back then. Crooks today didn't invent crime.
4
Touché. lol
3
I remember magazine ads that said most doctors prefer smoking Camel cigarettes. But being in the 1950s and early 1960s that was before Joe Camel. Hey, I haven't smoked for a year. Just realized that. Good report.
3
People are people. I always get angered by some 20-year-old self-rightous reporter who digs up dirt on presidents. Are they more perfect? Let's reveal what those looking for ancient dirt and see what they don't want told. All that said, interesting report.

When I was a kid (late 1950s-early1960s) my doctor smoked a cigar while giving an exam. We kids would play with mercury -- really cool and hours of fun. My grandma would blow smoke in one's ear to cure an ear ache. If you had a stye, application of a used tea bag reduced it in a day or two and removed it. Loose tooth? My uncle could get it with plyers and it didn't hurt. Maybe the shot of wiskey helped. Headache? Chew some willow or other select tree bark. Camomile tea for anxiety. Garlic can be used to lower blood pressure and fight colorectal cancer. I still go by some of the old herbal treatments but am thankful for modern medicine too. I'm careful about big pharma. As for health insurance ... the mafia offers better protection.
3
Good suggestion.
3
Huh ... almost like 2022 in select cities.
3
I recently read a neuro-scientific report that claimed much of Henry VIII odd and erratic behavior may have been related to head injuries he experienced as a youth and young man. I'm open to reasonable thoughts, just no trollist replies by those wanting to display their ignorance.
3
If remember correctly it was John Glenn who during his Mercury flight discovered the one design flaw nobody thought about. You guesses it. When you have to pee you never think no choice but on me.
3
Ah, it was so much easier to be a criminal back then. Never mind how I know.
2
I lived that generation gap. It was nothing in comparison to what I see goning on today.
2
It was a good film. Very entertaining and fun to know it was based off real history. Speakng of baseball ... Go Astros.
2
I do not remember the summer of love being too loving. Guess I was busy.
2
When I was born the doctor told my mother, "We did all we could but he pulled through anyway." Yes, I stole that from Rodney Dangerfield. For the recorded my wife and I are very pro life, but understand on rare occasions parents have to make a decision on the health of the mother when both she and child could experience death. We had two children. Lost one to drugs when she was 45 year old. Fortunately our son took a better path.
2
Why is it we do not give attentin and respect to Native Americans, but instead bow down to woke weirdos?
2
No one can make a believable remake of the 1970s. I'm tired of remakes anyway. What happened originality?
2
@candice_ecidnac oops, you are correct. Thanks for catching that typo. I honestly cannot control my fingers and auto help (or whatever it is called) gets in the way as well.
2
The Electrical College in original intention also equals the playing field between rural less populated areas an the mass population of the large cities. Is it outdated? About every time I think So, I end up thankful we have it. Added: ONLY provable citizens vote. Shop shipping in perspective voters from other countries.
2
Does your wife farting at night count? Shh, please keep that just in here between us.
2
Oooh, great idea.
2
Most people would be amazed how widespread the mafia (Sicilian, Irish, Latino, etc.) was into the early 1980s. As you said, and I'm sure, those times no longer exist. Gangs today are not the same and much worse.
2
@jamesfiaco4922 Are you doubting me? Please explain, but know I will not engage in an argument.
2
Thanks @Hollylivengood I welcome tips on how to tell trolls from genuine people.
2
I can't help but remember Monty Python and Mel Brooks
2
Sounds a lot like senior living communities today. I can say so because I live in one.
2
Yes, I'm always disappointed when a history film is not historically accurate. But as you implied, real life is not as exciting as fiction. So, because of movies some of us got cheated on high school history tests -- sort of cheated ourselves. Darn Hollyweird.
1
Oh, kind of like the Masons are like in America.
1
There have been more changes in the first quarter of the 21st century than all of the 20st century.
1
Woody is a fine actor (although I'll confess not liking all his films. That said, a son should never have to live under the shadow of his father or spend a lifetime seeking parental approval. I'm impressed with what Woody attempted or his father. I do not think I would have done the same for mine.
1
Makes me want to go back 50 years and rewrite my senior disortation. Very good report. What I wish I would have known then.
1
The only Holocaust film that caused my wife and me yo tear up was "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." It is well worth watching and probably a timely lesson. Thank you for posting this report. My wife's grandfather was sent to a concentration camp. So, yes it's personal.
1
With my luck I'd be eating my all-American ice cream while hearing the sound of tearing iron against an icebrg. Well, as I once heard someone rudly say, I least I would have gotten to ride on the boat.
1
Perhaps you could dig deeper into the horrific My Lai massacre. There is much more sadly involved than the U.S. government revealed to the public.
1
I would be willing to wear U.S. middle class fashion from the 1930s and 1940s if it didn't stick out so much tooday. Coward.
1
Thank you for this presentation. It confirms my theory. In the case of C*o*v*i*d we now know that was intended for germ warfare -- now the same lab is working on a stronger version. The j-a-b is another topic. My doctor said just get the annual flu shot and hey he was right.
1
... and do not believe they no longer remain.
1
This thoght just hit me. So I'm risking hate replies. But I wonder if prejudice against native Americans would have reduced if it were not for the bride ships.
1
Boulder PD completely blundered the initial investigation. The secretive nature of the family continues far beyond the conspiracy theories.
